There's much to see here. So, take your time and look around. We hope you enjoy learning about some of our reptiles and how they came to us.

He was abandoned at a pet store due to getting to big and that the owners were unable to keep him due to his size. Willie is a sulcate tortoise that can get up to 150 lb and up to 150+ years of age. Willie was about the size of a laptop when he first came to us and due to constant appropriate nutrition and space he is now our largest tortoise. Tortoises will grow their entire life and do not stop as its true for most reptiles as well. Most tortoises of this size come to us because they outgrow the small area that they are in or they dig out of peoples yards due to their massive front legs that are master burrowers.

Luke’s original owners contacted Nigel to help them determine what was wrong with their lizards. They believed they had alligator lizards and had 2 of them living on sand and eating salad mix. Nigel told them that they in fact had American Alligators that needed to be in water, were carnivores and were illegal to own as pets. They were both signed over to Safe Haven at only a year old and were named Bo and Luke by our volunteers. Unfortunately, the malnourishment was so bad that Bo passed away, and Luke’s growth has been badly stunted. He did not grow at all for about 3 years. Luke is now triple the size he was from when we first attained him. Luke unfortunate with never grown to the size he should or at the speed he should be due to severe conditions he lived in and the severe internal damage.

Justin first came to us with severe malnutrition and Safe Haven was unsure if he would be able to make it longer than a week. Due to the wonderful efforts of Safe Haven we were able to slowly increase the strength of Justin to be able to bring him back to health. Justin is now one of the best reptiles we bring for education and has been apart of several programs. Most bearded dragon come to use due to people haven fallen under financial difficulties. A lot of bearded dragon will come to us with severe malnutrition of either being severely over weight or severely underweight.

Boss Hog Came with a group of reptiles in 2010 that were abandoned in a warehouse in Westminster. He was found in a pool of rotten chicken and covered in slime. There was a Caiman found with him that died a few months later. The owner of the warehouse did not have the proper licensing to keep an American Alligator. Safe Haven is permitted to own up to up 10 American Alligators. Boss Hog had a hard time growing initially due to his sever malnourishment and a few health scares from his living conditions. He is now thriving and back to his natural behavior. He is used occasionally for programs and is beginning to become to large for that.
